A man was killed when the Toyota Camry he was driving crashed into the back of a tractor trailer on I-40 eastbound Saturday night, according to the Knoxville Police Department.
The wreck, near the Oglesby Road overpass, was some 10 miles west of an earlier five-vehicle crash on I-40 eastbound in Sevier County that left one dead and injured others.
The tractor trailer was in stop-and-go traffic at approximately 11:40 p.m. when it was struck by the Camry traveling “at interstate speeds,” according to KPD spokesman Scott Erland.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was transported to Regional Forensic Center for an autopsy, Erland said. There were no other injuries reported in the crash, he said.
The Sevier County accident, which occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m., forced the closure of all eastbound lanes. It was several hours before all lanes were reopened, and the injured were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, according to Bob Stahlke, Sevier County public information officer.
