High school volleyball: 25 players to watch in the Knoxville area in 2020

The high school girls volleyball season starts Monday. 

In the Knoxville area, Anderson County, Catholic, Concord Christian, Gatlinburg-Pittman and The King’s Academy reached the state tournament in their respective classes. Concord Christian and Catholic each reached the state championship in Division II-A and DII-AA, respectively, but lost. 

There were also two big coaching changes. Longtime Farragut coach Susan Davidson is now at Central, and Chris Hames, who led Knoxville Webb to six state championships, is now the coach at Maryville. 

Here are players to watch in 2020 in the Knoxville area: 

Brenna Allred, Oak Ridge, Sr.: The middle blocker was the District 4-AAA defensive player of the year in 2019, recording 156 total kills and 48 blocks. 

Alexa Austin, The King’s Academy, Sr.: Austin, who is a middle hitter, recorded 319 kills, 53 blocks and 49 aces in 2019. She was a nominee for the Knox News volleyball player of the year last season. 

Emma Biddle, Central, Sr.: Biddle, an outside hitter, is Central’s top returning player. In 2019, she was an all-district and all-region selection in 2019. 

Caleigh Carruthers, Alcoa, Jr.: Carruthers, an outside hitter, led Alcoa with 297 kills and was second on the team in digs with 367. She also recorded 40 aces in 2019. 

Madison Coffey, William Blount, Sr.: The outside hitter is one of William Blount’s top returning offensive players. Coffey recorded 136 kills, 75 digs and 16 assists in 2019. 

Abby Cross, William Blount, Sr.: The setter recorded a team-high 695 assists, while also registering 141 digs, 62 aces, 54 kills and 25 blocks in 2019. 

Hannah Freeman, Anderson County, Sr.: Freeman was co-MVP of District 4-AA and helped Anderson County reach the state tournament for the first time since 2008. 

Kolbie Greene, The King’s Academy, Sr.: The setter was a nominee for volleyball player of the year in 2019. She was named the region MVP and recorded 763 assists, 308 digs and 44 blocks. 

Paige Halcrow, Oak Ridge, Sr.: Halcrow, a setter, was an all-district selection in 2019, recording 498 assists, 178 kills and 113 aces. 

Kylie Hopkins, Maryville, Jr.: Hopkins, an outside hitter, was an all-district selection in 2019, recording 220 kills, 197 digs, 66 aces and 24 blocks. 

Cassie Kuerschen, Catholic, Sr.: The Tennessee commitment and libero won the volleyball player of the year award in 2019, recording 516 digs, 103 assists and 76 aces. 

Morgan McMurray, Anderson County, Sr.: McMurray is a Trevecca commitment and outside hitter. She recorded 536 kills, 343 digs, 49 blocks, 48 aces and was a nominee for volleyball player of the year in 2019. 

Ali Morris, Grace Christian, Jr.: Morris, an outside hitter, was named co-hitter of the year in DII-A East region in 2019. She averaged 17.2 kills and 12.2 digs a game. 

Briel Norman, Carter, Sr.: The setter was the District 3-AA MVP in 2019, recording 208 assists, 196 digs, 135 kills and 55 aces. She is committed to Montana State University-Billings. 

Ainsley Patrick, Oak Ridge, Sr.: The outside hitter and Tulane beach volleyball commitment was the District 4-AAA offensive player of the year in 2019, recording 405 kills, 105 aces and 17 blocks. 

Lauren Patterson, Seymour, Sr.: Patterson was named District 2-AA player of the year in 2019. The outside hitter recorded 212 kills, 190 digs, 45 aces and 20 blocks. 

Lexi Patty, Heritage, Sr.: The libero was an all-district selection in 2019, recording 496 digs, 129 assists and 189 points served. 

Kallie Powell, Carter, Sr.: Powell was named server of the year in District 3-AA, recording a team-high 57 aces. She also had 119 kills, 130 assists and 146 digs. 

Mikayla Profeta, Concord Christian, Sr.: Profeta, a middle blocker, recorded 136 kills, 44 blocks, 30 aces and was a nominee for volleyball player of the year in 2019. 

MaKenzi Rogers, Gibbs, Sr.: Rogers, a middle and right side hitter, was an all-district selection in 2019, recording 209 kills, 54 blocks and 24 aces.

Reese Schroeder, Farragut, Sr.: Schroeder, a setter, was named defensive specialist of the year in District 3-AAA in 2019, recording 499 digs and 74 aces. 

Zephanie Snyder, Heritage, Sr.: The outside hitter was the District 3-AAA MVP, recording 259 kills, 186 points served and 315 digs in 2019. 

Annabelle Sulish, Concord Christian, Jr.: The outside hitter helped Concord Christian reach the Division II-A state championship game for the second straight season, recording 310 kills, 130 digs and 39 aces. She was a nominee for volleyball player of the year. 

Cassie Vaughn, Fulton, Sr.: The team captain and libero was the runner-up defensive player of the year in District 3-AA in 2019. 

Delaney White, Maryville, Jr.: White, a setter, was an all-region selection in 2019, recording 374 assists, 197 digs, 102, kills 63 aces and 51 blocks.
