A 60-year-old man died after a bicycle accident in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Sunday morning, authorities said.
Harold Pardue, of Elkin, North Carolina, was riding a bicycle on Cades Cove Loop Road shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday when he fell and hit his head while going downhill, according to a news release from the National Park Service.
Pardue, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, lost consciousness, according to the release.
Park rangers who responded to the scene cared for him for 30 minutes before an ambulance crew rushed him to a landing zone. Pardue was then flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, where he died Monday.
