Correction: An earlier version of this story misstated the end date of the mandate’s extension.
Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters signed an executive order Tuesday extending the county’s mask mandate for public indoor spaces until Aug. 29.
In a release, Waters said that he did not have enough information to end the original order, which was issued July 10 and would end Wednesday at midnight. Waters cited that extending the mandate will help schools reopen safely.
“We’ve heard a variety of opinions, including those of the city leaders, health care providers, local businesses, and tourism officials regarding wearing a mask. The majority of the people we’ve spoken to are in favor of continuing the mandate,” continued Waters. “The wearing of masks is a temporary inconvenience that I believe will help slow the transmission of COVID-19.”
