Tennessee narrowly missed being ranked in the Top 25 of the Amway Coaches Poll, and the preseason rankings depict just how tough the Vols’ schedule projects to be in 2020.
Tennessee tied Boise State for the most voting points of any team ranked outside the Top 25. As such, the Vols would be tied for 26th in the ranking, if it extended that far.
Jeremy Pruitt is among the 65 coaches who vote in the poll.
Tennessee did not finish last season ranked in either the coaches poll or the Associated Press poll, despite finishing an 8-5 season with a six-game winning streak. The Vols did not beat any Top 25 opponents, likely a reason they remained unranked.
Tennessee returned the core of last season’s team, having lost three starters on offense and three on defense.
Six SEC teams are ranked in the Top 25: No. 3 Alabama, No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 LSU, No. 8 Florida, No. 11 Auburn and No. 13 Texas A&M.
The SEC shifted to a 10-game, conference-only schedule this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kentucky and Mississippi State joined Tennessee as SEC teams ranked outside the Top 25 that received votes.
Clemson is the preseason No. 1, followed by Ohio State.
